Design Sprint for 1.5 Million Users

Design SprintGovernmentJob Portal
500,000 applications/year
Key Outcome

The Situation

Kuntarekry.fi is Finland's job matching platform for the public sector, connecting job seekers with municipalities, hospitals, and schools. Around 500,000 job applications flow through it annually, serving 1.5 million users. FCG wanted to improve the job seeker experience and learn the Design Sprint methodology.

The Problem

First Design Sprint for the organization. Eleven people from different functions needed to align. The job application form had to work for a diverse group: nurses applying to hospitals, teachers to schools, engineers to municipal infrastructure projects.

The Approach

1

Day 1: User challenge identification and job search process mapping

2

Day 2: Ideation, benchmarking existing services, wireframe creation

3

Day 3: Decision-making on solutions, user flow finalization, prototype specs

4

Prototype built and tested with actual job seekers

5

Methodology documented for independent use

The Magic Moment

By day 3, the team had consensus on direction. Not from endless meetings. From structured decisions backed by evidence. The sprint compressed months of committee discussions into focused days where decisions had to happen.

The Outcome

Validated prototype and concrete development proposals backed by real user feedback. FCG now runs their own Design Sprints. Cross-functional alignment that continued beyond the sprint.

Concrete proposals for job application form improvements

Team trained to run their own Design Sprints

Clear product direction from user testing

Methodology transfer was the lasting impact

What Transferred

A 3-day sprint with 11 people from different functions is intense. The value comes from compressing what would normally be months of discussion into focused days where decisions have to happen.
